Signs your boiler is breaking

30th August - Posted in News

Your boiler is probably the most important and hardest working appliance in your home and a breakdown can have a massive impact. A boiler breakdown can be extremely un-expected and the signs can be minimal. We will now point out the signs that you should look out for and what to do in each instance.

The time the boiler takes to heat up

One of the first signs that you may notice is that the boiler is taking a longer time than usual to warm the radiators up. Alternatively, if you feel it’s not reaching its optimal temperature and you find you need to use an extra blanket to keep warm; your boiler/system has a problem.

If you’ve just moved into a new home, try switching the heating on and if it takes an unusual amount of time to warm up; it could mean that you need an engineer to investigate the causes. By doing this sooner rather than later may save you the cost of replacing the whole boiler. If you ignore the problem, then the damage to the boiler may be irreparable.

Corrosion

If you’ve just moved into a new home, try switching the heating on and if it takes an unusual amount of time to warm up; it could mean that you need an engineer to investigate the causes. By doing this sooner rather than later may save you the cost of replacing the whole boiler. If you ignore the problem, then the damage to the boiler may be irreparable.

Staining around your boiler

If you spot any dark stains on the wall or ceiling around your boiler, then this could be a sign that it’s releasing Carbon Monoxide. For this reason, it is fundamental to have a CO2 detector in your home as these gases can only be specifically identified through these detectors. If your Carbon Monoxide alarm goes off frequently, then you should turn off all gas appliances and call a professional to thoroughly inspect your boiler.

A leaky boiler /system

If you notice any signs of leakage from your boiler then, this needs to be addressed as soon as possible. Remember that the water may not only come from the boiler but also the connecting pipes. Some leaks are not visible. If you have a system that is losing pressure on a regular basis you will need to contact a professional urgently. Additionally, if you feel on a daily/weekly basis you frequently have to top up the pressure then this can also damage the boiler and other components including the pump, diverter valve and radiators, as you are putting fresh oxygenated water into the system which will speed up the process of corrosion.

Noisy boiler/system

If you should notice that your boiler is making sounds like a boiling kettle with a slight popping noise then this would suggest that the boiler has a scaled or blocked heat exchanger. If addressed early on then this can be easily and cheaply rectified, but if ignored, it could damage the boiler irreparably.

You can also easily self-diagnose how dirty your system is just by feeling the surface temperature of the front of the radiator. Make sure that the whole surface area has the same temperature when you check the heating has been on for 30 minutes or more. If the surface area of the radiator has a large cold spot or at worse, only the top is hot, then the system and boiler need to be flushed as soon as possible.

Your bills have risen

Your boiler might be making you pay over the odds for the energy it is using. Old boilers tend to be less efficient for yourself and more harmful to the environment. Even though new boilers can be costly, they will save you money in the long run due to their efficiency. Therefore, if you see a sudden rise in the amount you spend each month you should consider replacing it.

Here at Moatside, we can offer boiler servicing, which will identify and prevent any major problems that could occur. If you’ve noticed any of these signs and believe your boiler isn’t working to its maximum, don’t hesitate to give us a call today on 01536 726490 or complete our online contact form.

Just a line to thank you for the work carried out recently by your company - installing a complete new bathroom and complete new shower room. We are both very pleased with the end result and the standard of the work carried out. We also appreciate the helpful advice and the care and attention of your employee Steve.

A heartfelt thanks for a job well done, a courteous visit to rectify a problem of our own making! I don't recall such a pleasant encounter with a contractor in my years as a homeowner. So many thanks.

Pete from Moatside came out and quoted quickly for the work which was then carried out professionally and finished on time. We were left with no heating or hot water after one of the major amenities companies let us down. I would recommend Moatside to anyone.

I cannot recommend the team at Moatside highly enough. Not only did they perform all the plumbing work to a high standard, but also organised other contractors for the building and plastering work. The added bonus for us was that we had one point of contact at Moatside managing the work for us.

Thank you for a good job, completed on time with no mess!
